Fernando Mercado, Trustee Area #1
Trustee Area #1 - Cesar E. Chavez Schools and Frank Paul Elementary School
First elected to the Alisal Union Board of Trustees in 2015, Fernando Mercado represents Area 1 of the district, which includes Cesar Chavez and Frank Paul schools.
His first priority as public official is to make sure his constituents are being heard and that the district is financially solvent. But he also wants to ensure teachers are provided the necessary resources that will help them teach our growing community.
Mr. Mercado was born in Mexico and arrived in Salinas when he was 8 years old. He is an alumni of the AUSD, having attended Frank Paul and Virginia Rocca Barton schools. He went on to attend Harden Middle School, Alisal High School, and UC Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in History.
Mr. Mercado has worked as educator for 11 years in the Salinas Union High School District, and he often volunteers for the after school programs of El Sausal Middle School, where he’s worked as a long-term substitute. He has a niece and a nephew who attend Creekside Elementary. He has no children of his own, but he’s fond of saying he considers the nearly 9,000 students of the Alisal USD all his children.
Recent changes in state laws require all school district elections to coincide with general elections, so Mr. Mercado's term will expire in 2020.
