Art and poetry offer important avenues of expression for everyone, young and old. Now in its fourth year, the Art and Poetry Contest offers Alisal USD students an outlet to express themselves; to observe the world around them and find a way to express appreciation for it using their artistic and literary talents.

This year, the Art and Poetry committee of Alisal USD has selected the theme “A Good Leader is… What Do I Admire in a Leader?” 2024 is an election year, which offers an opportunity for students to reflect on the qualities they admire in a leader. Who do they consider a leader? Their teacher? Parents? Aunts or Uncles? Their soccer coach or folklórico instructor? Children learn leadership abilities from the adults, and it’s important for them to reflect on what those qualities are.

Or perhaps the students are inclined to write an ode to an adult they consider a leader; praise their qualities in a song. Do they enjoy teachers who are funny? Who are caring? Who are strict and consistent? Maybe students are inspired by comic book heroes and they are excited to make a drawing of the Black Panther. Or they may prefer a national or world leader. Brainstorm with your teacher and classmates for ideas about putting all of this in a poem or a drawing.

Students have an opportunity to submit one poem or one drawing. Also, students have the option to enter a poem in Spanish.  Teachers may submit one finalist from his/her classroom in each category to their site administrators. Site administrators will help decide how to select one finalist to submit to the District office in each category.
