Alisal USD appoints key staff to top positions 


Salinas, Calif. — The Alisal Union School District begins the 2022-23 school year with the appointment of key personnel in positions of strategic importance to the District’s daily operations.


In addition to selecting a new leader in the Human Resources Division, the District appointed two experienced administrators to the newly created positions of Manager of Risk Management and Program Manager for the Alisal Virtual Academy, as well as three seasoned administrators to fill recently created vacancies. 


Veteran educator Arturo Durán has been appointed Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Ms. Maurene Coloma was selected for the newly created position of Risk Management Manager, and Mr. William Franzell will be leading the brand new Alisal Virtual Academy.


“The District has been looking to better serve our families by offering more options for parents and students,” said Superintendent Jim Koenig. “The new Alisal Virtual Academy will offer a virtual option for families who need it. The addition of a Manager of Risk Management will maximize the community’s use of taxpayer funds as it relates to the District's insurance and safety programs.”


Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. Mr. Arturo Duran’s career in education spans nearly three decades, during which he worked as bilingual teacher, principal, assistant principal, and most recently as Director of Administrative Services at Lamont Elementary School District. Previous to that he served as vice principal of Lamont Elementary School District, and as principal at Grayson Charter School in the Patterson Joint Unified School District. 


Risk Manager. Ms. Maurene Coloma worked for the Monterey County Office of Education for the past 17 years in a variety of settings with increasing responsibilities. She last served as fiscal analyst in the Fiscal Services Department. 


Alisal Virtual Academy Program Manager. Mr. William Franzell returns to Alisal USD after serving as educational administrator  for science education at the Monterey County Office of Education, where he designed programs that were used in all 24 school districts in Monterey County. A 25-year educational veteran, Mr. Franzell served at Alisal Union School District as teacher from 2004 to 2014 and instructional coach from 2014 to 2016. 


The District also promoted veteran educators to fill vacancies in the Educational Services Division: Ms. Maria Alvarez, former Monte Bella Elementary Principal, will now serve as Director of Educational Equity, and Ms. Diana Garcia, former Jesse G. Sánchez Elementary Principal, will be the Director of Pupil Personnel Services


Ms. Diana Garcia began her career at Alisal USD as a bilingual teacher at Creekside Elementary in 2000. She has been a principal since 2013, first at Dr. Oscar F. Loya Elementary and later at Jesse G. Sanchez Elementary. In addition to holding credentials as teacher and administrator, she holds a counseling credential. 


Ms. Maria Alvarez’s career spans more than 30 years. She arrived at Alisal USD in 2017 to serve as assistant principal at Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary. She became principal at Monte Bella Elementary in 2018. She holds an M.A. in Education and Administration from San Jose State University, and is currently a doctoral candidate at UMass Global/Brandman University in Monterey. 


“These promotions and recent hires will inject new energy into Alisal USD leadership for the 2022-23 school year,” Superintendent Jim Koenig said. 


“Alisal USD is proving once again that its commitment to the success of each student continues to resonate with educators willing to serve their needs. We look forward to a fantastic school year as we continue to build systems of support for our students that will facilitate their learning.”
