- Alisal Union School District
Lydia Cervantes, AUSD Classified Employee of the Year
Lydia Cervantes began working for the Alisal Union School District in 1977 as a paraeducator at Bardin Elementary. This year she was selected Classified Employee of the Year. Superintendent Jim Koenig delivered a certificate to Ms. Cervantes at Frank Paul Elementary, where she has worked for 20 years and is now a resource specialist paraeducator and an after-school teacher.
Among the roles Ms. Cervantes has held in the 42 years at Alisal USD, Ms. Cervantes worked in the migrant education department at Sanborn Elementary (now Jesse G. Sánchez) for 15 years. Working for Alisal USD allowed Ms. Cervantes to raise her children Angel, Esabel, Agustine and Joseph. She has been helping raise two of her grandsons after her oldest son, Angel, passed away last year. All her children attended college and most of them have gone into careers in education. In sum, Ms. Cervantes has raised a family of educators. Angel, her oldest son, attended Fremont School when he was young. He later became a US Marine.
“I just love” working for the District, she said. “When I first started, I was going to work for UPS. I had gotten the job but then I got this one and I thought it was perfect. I would work from 8 to 3, when (the kids) would get out. My husband Eustaquio worked nights for the (California) Highway Patrol; it was perfect for me to take care of my kids. I love the children. I like to be part of the future, for them to make sure they’re doing it right.”
Ms. Cervantes also draws inspiration and support from her grandchildren Little Angel, Xavier, Agustine Jr, granddaughter Azriel, daughter-in-law Denise and son-in-law Adam Babione.
Congratulations, Ms. Cervantes. Thank you for all your years of dedication and service to countless Alisal families.
