First day of instruction -- Superintendent's letter
July 20, 2020
Dear Alisal Union School District Families,
The Board of Trustees of the Alisal Union School District voted last week to begin the 2020-21 school year using remote instruction, not in-classroom teaching, as the means of. This difficult decision was made in light of increasing numbers of COVID-19 infections in Salinas in general and the 93905 zip code in particular. While everyone realizes online instruction is not the best method to educate our students, the pandemic has made it very challenging to meet in person without risking the community’s health and well being in the process. The safety of our students, community, and staff must be our top priority.
Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 5th, and we will begin with remote instruction until health indicators signal it’s safe to move gradually into the classroom. Once we are permitted by state and health officials we will move into Phase Two of our plan: a Hybrid model with only 25 percent of our students in class at one time. We will be implementing many safety measures. These safety measures include enhanced hand washing and sanitizing at schools, temperature screening procedures, social distancing in classrooms and limiting the number of students on campus at a given time, limiting adult access to campus, personal protective equipment for students and staff, strict movement procedures for students and staff on campus, and social emotional support provided by the school counselors.
In order to accomplish our goal of providing high-quality learning options following these guidelines, we need your commitment to the following expectations:
- Students will attend the daily class meeting.
- Students will complete all assignments.
- Parents will communicate with school personnel to seek support.
- Parents will ensure students login everyday.
We know there are still many questions and we are updating the Frequently-Asked-Questions document on our website regularly. Many parents participated in one of two town hall meetings hosted on July 16, and we plan to have one more before the start of the new school year.
Thank you for trusting the Alisal Union School District with your child’s education.
We remain #AlisalStrong!
