Trustees appoint Interim Superintendent
The Board of Trustees of Alisal Union School District has tapped Jim Koenig as Interim Superintendent. His appointment begins July 1 and will continue until June 30, 2020, or until a permanent superintendent is hired.
"We're very fortunate to have on staff someone as committed to the fiscal responsibility of the Alisal Union School District as Mr. Jim Koenig. He has been with us for over eleven years, and in that time he has shown his outstanding leadership qualities and dedication to our students. His strong work ethic, his professionalism and commitment to the Alisal have earned him the respect of his colleagues, staff and Board. Without a doubt, he will ensure this transition is smooth and we look forward to working with him as we seek a permanent superintendent," Board President Fernando Mercado said.
Mr. Koenig will replace Dr. Héctor Rico in an interim capacity. Dr. Rico chose to pursue other opportunities after his contract expired June 30.
An Army veteran, Mr. Koenig has served with Alisal Union School District for over eleven years as Associate Superintendent of Business Services. Before coming to Alisal USD, Mr. Koenig served as chief business official of San Benito High School District in Hollister. Overall, his experience in the finance and operations sphere of public education spans over 14 years.
Mr. Koenig was born in Panama and raised in San Jose, California. After graduating from West Point, he spent 28 years in the U.S. Army, mostly in field artillery. On return from his last military assignment in Spain, Mr. Koenig returned to school, earning a master’s degree in Business Administration at Santa Clara University. After graduation, he chose a career in school business.
Mr. Koenig is enthusiastic about taking the reins of the district.
“Alisal is a super community and our District schools are the focus of that community. With the Board of Trustee’s support, I look forward to serving the District’s 9,000 students, teachers and other employees, parents and stakeholders in East Salinas.”
On Friday, trustees also discussed the search process for a permanent superintendent and reviewed a sample request for proposals. Administrators are scheduled to issue a request for proposals on July 5 for firms interested in conducting a superintendent search.
