Alisal USD represents at All in 4 Equity Conference
The Alisal Union School District was well represented at Saturday's All in 4 Equity Conference by almost 40 classified, teachers, administrators, cabinet members, trustees and parents. The day-long conference at Embassy Suites Hotel in Seaside opened up with Mariachi Juvenil Alisal, who sang “Canta, canta, canta,” “Me he de comer esa tuna,” and three more songs. Always a crowd pleaser, our budding musicians did not disappoint.
Participation of Alisal USD employees was part of our ongoing efforts to increase capacity to attain educational equity for all our students. The event was organized by the Monterey County Office of Education. Dr. Carissa Purnell, director of the Alisal Family Resource Centers Network, introduced keynote speaker Jeff Duncan-Andrade, associate professor of Raza Studies and Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies at San Francisco State University. Dr. Duncan-Andrade also teaches English at Mandela High School in East Oakland. Dr. Duncan-Andrade has lectured around the world about the elements of effective teaching in schools serving poor and working class children.
In addition to introducing the keynote speaker, Dr. Purnell co-hosted “Building Power and Voice Through Family Resource Center Collaboratives” along with Comité de Padres Unidos. Presenters talked about how the relationship happened, the history and motivations behind the creation and ways the relationship can be duplicated and used to inspire staffing, programs, and innovative funding.
Participants could also attend workshops on special needs students, on how implicit biases affect behavior and can have an impact on education, cities, and neighborhoods; on the school to prison pipeline, on developing a trauma-informed classroom, on empowering parents, and more.
