About The District
The Alisal Union School District (AUSD) serves just under 9,000 students in twelve neighborhood K-6th grade schools (including preschool programs). Many of our over 400 certificated and 300 classified staff members are from the community and proudly serve it. The District is situated in East Salinas, California. Salinas has a large agricultural base with a significant number of farmworker and immigrant families who do their best for their children and families, working long days to also feed our city, state, and nation. Our demographics include:
- 94% LCFF Unduplicated Count
- 92% Latinos
- 1% White
- <1% each: African American, Asian, Filipino, Pacific Islander, two or more races
- 85% Qualify for Free/Reduced-Priced Meals (although All of our students get free meals)
- 75% English Learners
- 10% Migrant
- 10% Homeless
- 10% Students With Disabilities
- 100% amazing students/our country's future leaders
Because of our demographics, equity and cultural responsiveness are at the heart of what we do. Apart from a plethora of other rigorous academic programs and foci, we currently offer several forms of bilingual program offerings in nine of our schools, including a districtwide dual immersion program. Our district's motto is "AUSD, cultivating the whole child for a world-class education." This simple but highly meaningful and aspirational statement acutely honors our community and speaks to our goal to meet, not only the academic needs of our students but, also, whatever social-emotional and other needs they have that will facilitate their ability to succeed in school and in life. To this end, we created a new district-level division at the start of the 2018/19—Whole Child Education—to help us better focus on serving the whole child in support of high student achievement.
In addition to our twelve schools, we offer three family resource centers whose staff endeavors to assist families to empower themselves to be healthy and self-sufficient via a multitude of direct and referral services. At our schools, in addition to our dedicated office, custodial, cafeteria, and playground staff, teachers and principals, each school is also supported by their own Counselor, Library Specialist, Instructional Coach, and assistant principal. Additionally, every school is further supported by districtwide Psychologists, School Nurse and LVNs, and Speech Therapists.
Lastly, as part of our whole-child efforts, we offer seasonal sports (flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer) at each of our schools, music (including our amazing Alisal All-Star Drumline and Colorguard/Tall Flags and Mariachi Juvenil Alisal), folklórico dance, and after-school and weekend academic support and enrichment, including NASA STEM Academy and Intro to Coder Dojo.
AUSD, cultivating the whole child for a world-class education!
